Matiass Preiss Ceramics – Precision-Made Icelandic Stoneware from Mosfellsbær

I was born into clay.

Both my parents are potters, and so were their parents before them. The rhythm of the wheel, the weight of wet clay, the smell of a kiln cooling — these things have always been part of my life. It’s not something I chose; it’s something that shaped me.

Growing up, I learned that true craftsmanship isn’t about speed or trends. It’s about patience — about doing the same thing a thousand times until your hands understand what your mind can’t explain. Every cup, every plate, every bowl carries that quiet repetition, that pursuit of balance between precision and imperfection.

Today, I focus on creating refined dining ware from durable stoneware. My main work explores Japanese snowflake crackle glazes, where chemistry, fire, and timing meet to create something that can never be exactly repeated. That unpredictability keeps me humble; it reminds me that the potter never fully controls the outcome — the kiln has the final word.

What I make is not decoration. It’s meant to be used, handled, and lived with. I believe beauty grows from simplicity, and that the objects we use every day should carry a sense of peace — something honest, made by human hands.

Each piece I create is a continuation of a family tradition — quiet work, steady hands, and respect for the materials that sustain us.
