From inside a studio, the word means something more specific — and more testable.</p><p>I am suspicious of the phrase “high-end.” It gets attached to anything with a high price and good photography, and ceramics is full of both. But people who write to the studio use the phrase for a reason: they are trying to name a difference they can feel — between a cup that is merely expensive and a cup that justifies itself the moment it is picked up. That difference is real, and it can be described precisely.</p><p>So this is my honest answer, as someone who makes pots rather than markets them. I wrote the longer, calmer version as <a href="https://matiasspreiss.com/high-end-ceramics/">a collector's guide to high-end ceramics</a>; this is the studio-floor version.</p><h2>Price is the wrong test</h2><p>A factory can set any price it likes. What it cannot manufacture is time. A single cup from this studio passes through my hands at least a dozen times: weighed, thrown, dried, trimmed, dried again, bisque fired, glazed, fired to stoneware temperature, sanded, photographed, and entered in the registry. Between the first and last touch, weeks pass. Some pieces do not survive — a glaze runs, a crack opens in the cooling kiln — and the losses are part of what every surviving piece carries.</p><p>So the honest cost of handmade work is not the material, which is cheap, or the label, which does not exist. It is the concentrated time of one person doing one thing extremely well, plus everything the kiln takes. When a piece is priced seriously, that is what is being priced.</p><h2>The hand is the technology</h2><p>Most ceramics on earth are cast in molds — identical bodies by the ten thousand. That work has its place; it is how good affordable tableware exists. But it belongs to a different category of object. A wheel-thrown piece is a series of decisions made once: how thin the wall dares to be, where the curve turns, how the rim should meet a lip. You can read those decisions with your fingertips — the throwing rings inside the wall, the trimmed spiral under the foot.</p><p>That is also why <a href="https://matiasspreiss.com/journal/why-handmade-ceramics-are-never-identical/">no two handmade pieces are ever identical</a>. Sameness is a factory virtue. The glazes I work with are chosen because they do not, entirely. Crystalline glazes — the family obsession since my grandfather's research decades ago — grow their crystal formations in the cooling kiln, and no two firings grow them alike. A short guide to telling them apart.</p><p>Three of the forms I make most often — the bowl, the yunomi, and the tea bowl — get mistaken for each other constantly, and the confusion is reasonable: all three are open vessels without handles. But they are distinct forms with distinct jobs, and once you see the differences you cannot unsee them.</p><h2>The bowl</h2><p>A bowl is defined by openness: wider than it is tall, with a curve designed to offer its contents upward. Bowls are the generalists of ceramics — food, fruit, whisked eggs, keys by the door — and their proportions follow function directly. A shallow bowl presents; a deep bowl holds heat.</p><p>In the hand, a good bowl is judged by its lift: the curve from foot to rim should feel continuous, and the weight should sit low without feeling dead. Much of that is decided at the trimming stage, when <a href="https://matiasspreiss.com/journal/trimming-a-ceramic-bowl-why-the-foot-matters/">the foot is cut</a>.</p><h2>The yunomi</h2><p>A yunomi is a tea cup, not a bowl: taller than it is wide, sized for one pair of hands, with no handle. It is the Japanese form for everyday tea — not the ceremony, just the daily habit. The proportions are the identity: roughly a cylinder, slightly waisted or flared depending on the maker's hand, standing on a small trimmed foot.</p><p>The absence of a handle is functional, as I described in <a href="https://matiasspreiss.com/journal/how-a-handmade-yunomi-cup-is-thrown/">how a yunomi is thrown</a>: the wall is your thermometer. If you cannot hold it, don't drink it yet. A yunomi suits green tea and black tea equally, and in this studio it has quietly become the form most people adopt for coffee too.</p><h2>The tea bowl</h2><p>The tea bowl — chawan in Japanese — is the widest and most formal of the three. It is the vessel matcha is whisked and drunk from: broad enough for the whisk to move, deep enough to hold the foam, shaped to be raised with both hands. Here is how work is made to survive that — and why it should be.</p><p>Some handmade ceramics are bought and then protected — placed on a shelf, used twice a year, admired from a distance. I understand the impulse and I make work against it. A cup is completed by drinking from it. A bowl that never holds food is a sculpture of a bowl. The highest compliment my work can receive is being someone's default mug, chosen without thinking every single morning for ten years.</p><h2>Built for use, not despite it</h2><p>Daily use is a design requirement, not an afterthought. It starts with the material: stoneware fired to vitrification is dense, hard, and does not absorb water — the same family of material as the most durable tableware ever made. It continues in the form: a foot ring wide enough to stand securely, a wall thick enough to insulate but balanced enough to lift, a <a href="https://matiasspreiss.com/journal/what-makes-a-handmade-cup-feel-good-in-the-hand/">rim finished soft</a> because it will touch someone's mouth thousands of times.</p><p>Glazes for functional surfaces are chosen to be stable and food-safe, fired fully so the glass is complete. Glaze is not decoration on a cup — it is half the cup.</p><p>Take one thrown form — the same clay, the same profile, the same weight — and glaze it three ways: a glossy deep green, a dry matte white, a crackle celadon. You now have three different objects. They will attract different people, suit different drinks, feel different against the mouth, and age differently over years of use. Glaze is not a coat of paint on a finished thing. It is half the thing.</p><h2>What a glaze actually is</h2><p>A glaze is glass, engineered to melt onto clay and stay there. It is mixed from minerals — silica for the glass itself, fluxes to bring the melting point down, alumina for stability, oxides for color — suspended in water. In the kiln, the coat melts into a liquid skin, moves under gravity and surface tension, and freezes wherever the cooling catches it. It thins where it stretches over a rim or a throwing ridge, and gathers where the form gives it a place to rest. Many glazes change color with that thickness — thin, they show the clay through a toasted edge; thick, they deepen and pool like water. Potters say the glaze &quot;breaks&quot; over the edges. A cup glazed this way underlines its own form: every ridge your hand feels is also drawn in color. It is the closest thing ceramics has to free calligraphy.</p><h2>Crackle and crystalline</h2><p>Some surfaces are events rather than coatings. A crackle glaze fits the clay slightly imperfectly on purpose, so the cooled glass relieves its tension in a net of fine lines. A crystalline glaze goes further: held at the right temperature on the way down, the melt grows visible crystals — blooms of mineral order that cannot be placed, only invited. Working between them is less a style than a discipline: leave things out.</p><p>My studio is in Iceland, twenty minutes from Reykjavík. The forms I make — yunomi, tea bowls, quiet cylindrical cups — come from a Japanese tradition. People sometimes ask how those two things fit together. Honestly, they fit almost too well.</p><p>Both cultures made a virtue of leaving things out. Japanese ceramics value the unforced surface, the asymmetry that is accepted rather than corrected, the object that serves daily life without announcing itself. Iceland performs the same edit on a landscape scale: black sand, moss, basalt, weather. Very few elements, arranged with total conviction.</p><h2>What the light does</h2><p>Icelandic light is the strongest influence on how I judge a surface. In summer the light barely leaves; in winter it arrives low and sideways for a few hours and is gone. Low-angle light is merciless with ceramics — it rakes across a glaze and shows every ripple, every place where the wall hesitated, every pooling of the glaze in a trimmed line.</p><p>Judging pieces in that light changes what survives. A surface that only works under gallery spotlights does not get out of this studio. A surface that becomes more interesting as the light drops — where a matte glaze holds shadow, or crystals catch the last of it — that is the work I keep.</p><h2>Landscape as palette</h2><p>I try not to illustrate Iceland — no printed puffins, no map of the island in the glaze. The reasons are physical: weight, balance, wall, rim, and surface.</p><p>Most people cannot explain why one cup feels right and another feels wrong, but everyone can tell the difference blindfolded. The judgement happens in the hand, not the eye, and it happens fast. As a maker, my work is mostly about the things you feel and never consciously see.</p><p>There are five of them: weight, balance, wall thickness, the rim, and the surface.</p><h2>Weight and balance</h2><p>A cup should weigh what it looks like it weighs. When the hand expects one thing and gets another, the object feels wrong — too light reads as cheap and hollow, too heavy reads as clumsy. Stoneware has a natural density that helps here; the material itself has presence without being a burden.</p><p>Balance matters as much as total weight. A cup with a thick base and thin upper wall feels like it wants to sit down. The weight should be distributed through the whole form, which is decided partly on the wheel and partly during <a href="https://matiasspreiss.com/journal/trimming-a-ceramic-bowl-why-the-foot-matters/">trimming</a>. When the balance is right, the cup almost floats between your fingers.</p><h2>The wall</h2><p>Wall thickness controls two things: how the cup feels against your lips and how it handles heat. A thin-walled porcelain cup transmits heat instantly — elegant, but demanding. A thicker stoneware wall holds the warmth back, so the cup can be held while the drink is still hot. For a handleless form like a yunomi this is not a detail; it is the whole design.</p><p>The wall should also be even. An uneven wall makes a cup feel unstable in the hand even when it is sitting still. This is how and why it is trimmed.</p><p>When people look at a bowl, they look at the inside and the glaze. When potters look at a bowl, they turn it over. The foot — the trimmed ring of clay the piece stands on — is where you can read how the maker works. It is the part no one is supposed to notice, which is exactly why it matters.</p><p>Trimming happens at the leather-hard stage: the clay has stiffened enough to hold its shape but still cuts cleanly, like hard cheese. The bowl is centered upside down on the wheel, held with soft clay lugs, and metal tools shave away the excess left in the base during throwing.</p><h2>What trimming actually does</h2><p>A bowl comes off the wheel with a thick, heavy base — deliberately. That reserve of clay is what the foot is carved from. Trimming does three things at once: it brings the weight of the piece down to what the form needs, it defines the curve of the underside so the outside profile continues all the way to the table, and it cuts the foot ring itself.</p><p>Weight is the first thing you feel when you pick up a bowl, before you have consciously judged anything. This is how one is made on the wheel, from a lump of stoneware to a form that fits between two hands.</p><p>A yunomi is a Japanese form: a tall cup without a handle, made for everyday tea. It is one of the most honest shapes a potter can make, because there is nothing to hide behind. No handle, no lid, no decoration that can distract from the wall itself. If the weight is wrong, you feel it the first time you pick it up.</p><p>In my studio in Iceland, yunomi are thrown one at a time from stoneware. Each begins as a weighed ball of clay, usually somewhere between 300 and 400 grams depending on how tall the finished cup should stand after firing. Clay shrinks as it dries and again in the kiln, so the thrown form is always larger than the cup you finally hold.</p><h2>Centering</h2><p>Everything starts with centering. The ball of clay is pressed onto the wheel head and forced into the middle of the spinning wheel with steady pressure from both hands. Off-center clay wobbles, and a wobble at this stage becomes an uneven rim later. Centering looks calm from the outside. It is actually the most physical part of the work: the clay pushes back, and you hold it still until it gives in.</p><p>You know the clay is centered when it runs under your hands without movement — the surface feels motionless even though the wheel is turning. Only then does the actual cup begin.</p><h2>Opening and pulling the wall</h2><p>The centered clay is opened with the thumbs or fingertips, leaving enough thickness in the base for trimming later. Then the wall is pulled: fingers inside and outside the cylinder, meeting through the clay, moving slowly upward. Each pull thins and raises the wall. A yunomi usually takes three or four pulls.</p><p>The proportions matter more than any measurement. A yunomi is taller than it is wide, but not by much — a form that sits securely on the table and still feels slender in the hand. The rim is finished with a light touch or a strip of chamois so it will be soft against the lip. If the tea is too hot to hold, it is too hot to drink.
